Florida (+3) at Alabama – October 2

This SEC slugfest comes early this year. Alabama beat Florida 32-13 in the conference title game last year. That Gators team had legend Tim Tebow at quarterback, but John Brantley is ready to step up with his rocket arm and three years experience learning the system. Don’t count out Florida’s chances.

Texas (+3) at Oklahoma – October 2

This Red River Rivalry game in Dallas is being played the same day as Florida and Alabama. It’s almost like the football gods planned it this way. This game could determine the Big 12 winner and quarterbacks Landry Jones and Garrett Gilbert are ready to step out of the shadows of Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy.

Oregon (+3) at USC – October 30

The Pac-10 doesn’t have the hype of recent years. USC is mired in the sanctions caused by the Pete Carroll regime. Oregon would have been a top-5 team nationally if quarterback Jeremiah Masoli wasn’t kicked out of the program. However, both squads are easily top-20 caliber and this should be a great game.

Ohio State (+3 ½) at Iowa – November 20

Ohio State has a great team this year, but the Big Ten is not about to just roll over. Iowa, Wisconsin and Penn State are all ranked in the preseason top-14. Iowa is even a national title contender and gets the Buckeyes at home after taking them to overtime in Columbus last year.

The American League schedule for Monday has Cleveland at Boston, Minnesota at Tampa Bay, Kansas City at Oakland, and Toronto at the Yankees. The Blue Jays will send Brandon Morrow (7-6, 4.62 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, while New York counters with A.J. Burnett (9-8, 4.52 ERA). Righthander Morrow pitched at Yankee Stadium back on July 4, surrendering five runs on nine hits over six innings of work in a no-decision. Righthander Burnett faced the Blue Jays at home in his July 2 outing, holding them scoreless on four hits over 6 2-3 innings of work but still settling for a no-decision. Burnett is coming off back-to-back dominant wins over the Royals and Tribe.

Over in the National Football League on Monday it'll then be Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Milwaukee at the Cubs, Houston at St. Louis, Washington at Arizona, San Diego at the Dodgers, and the Mets at Atlanta. Johan Santana (8-5, 3.11 ERA) will be trying to pitch New York to a win in that last matchup, while the Braves give the ball to Tim Hudson (11-5, 2.40 ERA). Lefthander Santana was rocked by the Cardinals in his most recent trip to the mound, allowing seven runs on 13 hits over 5 2-3 innings of work in that contest. Righthander Hudson dazzled the Nationals last time out, holding them to one run on seven hits over 7 2-3 innings of work in the victory, walking one and striking out seven.

UFC action will air live on the VERSUS network Sunday night from the San Diego Sports Arena. Here are the latest football odds, plus news and notes.

The headline match is Jon Jones (-800) against former International Fight League light heavyweight champ Vladimir Matyushenko (otherwise known as The Janitor).

Jones is only 23-years-old, with his first fight coming in April 2008. He has a 10-1 MMA record with six coming by knockout. This rising star saw his only loss come against Matt Hamill last December, an illegal elbow disqualification.

The 6-foot-4 Jones made his next opponent pay. It was Brandon Vera back in March and he earned ‘Knockout of the Night’ with a vicious TKO (elbows and punches)

Matyushenko is from Belarus and gives up three inches to Jones at 6-foot-1. He’s 16 years his senior. He has a 24-4 MMA record with the last two fights after returning to the UFC (wins over Eliot Marshall and Igor Pokrajac).

This is the first time he’s headlined a UFC fight since Sept. 2001, losing to Tito Ortiz for the light heavyweight title. His experience fighting Ortiz, and other big names in the sport like Antônio Rogério Nogueira, gives him a lot of confidence.

A UFC internet poll showed that 92 percent of people think Jones will win. That’s a big reason why the odds are so heavy on him. Believers (and backers) of Matyushenko are in for a big payday if he comes through.

Matyushenko is using Fabricio Werdum's recent upset win over Fedor Emelianenko as inspiration and he thinks he’s the next big ‘dog to cash in.

2007-2008 English Premier League Preview

The 2007-08 Premiership season is nearly here and it should be another very exciting season of great action. The defending champions are Manchester United and they will be one of the favorites to repeat again. They have some of the best players in the world led by Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Christiano Ronaldo. They also now have Owen Hargreaves who they got from Bayern Munich. Alex Ferguson is excellent in the midfield and United also picked up Brazilian playmaker Anderson and Portuguese winger Nani.

Chelsea was the runner-up last season and will try and take the title this time but will be hard-pressed to keep pace with United. Chelsea did sign Claudio Pizarro from Bayern Munich and Steve Sidwell from Reading. Jose Mourinho will need to do a better job this season if Chelsea is to retake the title.

Arsenal is still dealing with Thierry Henry's departure to Barcelona but they did sign international striker Eduardo Da Silva from Dinamo Zagreb as a possible replacement. Arsenal's young players like Cesc Fabregas could surprise this season.

The big news for this season might come from Liverpool. They got Athletico Madrid's striker, Fernando Torres. He has been one of the most sought after players in Europe over the last few years. Liverpool is making a lot of noise and may be a threat to United and Chelsea and should at least compete with Arsenal for third place. After the top four teams there is a definite drop off.

It has come down to the big three in terms of Premier League Championships for a long while now. In the past 15 years Manchester United has won the title 9 times, Arsenal 3 times and Chelsea twice. Liverpool will try and move into the elite group and win the title this season.

The English Premier League betting season begins in August and runs through to May the following year. Each of the 20 teams plays 38 regular season matches. That gives soccer fans a great deal of action to bet on each week during the season.

Arsenal Looks to Challenge this Season

William Gallas says Arsenal must fight if they want to improve upon last year’s fourth place finish and compete with Manchester United and Chelsea. "In the past we have relied too much on lovely football to see us through," Gallas said, "But we have learned from last season. Sometimes you have to fight to achieve success. Some people have claimed this club is on a downward spiral. But there is an enormous determination to put things right. Last season we were behind the leaders too early. We can't let that happen again.”

One player that wants to help is midfielder Cesc Fabregas who definitely knows never to give up. Fabregas has been superb for Arsenal and even though Thierry Henry's departure to Barcelona may have hurt, it has given Fabregas the chance to shine. Real Madrid wanted Fabregas but he chose to stay with Arsenal.

Many people believe that Arsenal can’t compete with United, Chelsea and even Liverpool but Fabregas is not one of them. Former player Freddie Ljungberg believes that Arsenal can’t compete because they have lost so many players but Fabregas believes otherwise saying, "While I respect the opinions of Henry and Ljungberg, I believe this team can fight for the title."

"What I say is not madness. We got to the Champions League final in 2006, often playing without players like Henry, Ljungberg and Ashley Cole."

Fabregas definitely wants to win and oftentimes displays a little bit too much emotion. "I have matured very much over the last two years and I am prepared to be the leader of the team. Maybe then people won't ask me any more about becoming the next Patrick Vieira.”

"I would love to captain Arsenal. It is a matter of enormous pride to me because the fans are always with me and that support is very valuable. I know how the fans suffer when we lose,” Fabregas said.

Arsenal is definitely a longshot to win the Premier League this season. Manchester United and Chelsea are the two overwhelming favorites and Arsenal has their work cut out for them to compete for the Championship this season.

1 MLB Wager

There was a full slate of MLB games on Sunday, but I only really liked 1 of them. I expected the Mets to take 3 of 4 from the Dodgers by beating them on Sunday. It was Orlando Hernandez taking the mound against a rookie named Eric Stults.

So my pick was: Mets over Dodgers

The Dodgers struck first in this one as Furcal led off the bottom of the first by driving a 1-1 pitch into the right-field pavilion for his second leadoff homer this season and 20th of his career and James Loney hit an RBI double in the fourth. The Mets battled back however as New York tied it in the sixth. Jose Reyes tripled and scored on a double by Milledge that chased Stults. Wright drove in the tying run with a broken-bat bloop single against Rudy Seanez.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, Nomar Garciaparra hit his 3rd homer of the season to give LA a 2-run lead. My hope at this point is that the Dodgers overworked bullpen would blow the lead. Well, in the bottom of the 8th, Jose Reyes hit a double and scored on a Carlos Beltran sac fly.

So it was 4-3 going into the 9th and Jonathan Broxton tried to close things out. Carlos Delgado led off with a single and left for pinch runner Anderson Hernandez. Then, after wild pitch moved him to 2nd, Paul LoDucas groundout moved him to 3rd. Then, in a bizarre play, Matt Kemp dropped a shallow pop up to allow the Mets to tie the game. In the 10th inning, the Mets scored the go-ahead run on a Chip Ambres 2 out single. Billy Wagner struck out Garciaparra in the 10th for the save and the Mets gave me the win.

If head coach Herman Edwards doesn’t run Larry Johnson into the ground, the Chiefs could make a run at the AFC championship – in 2009. Until then, save your money people.

Speaking of windows closing, the Panthers had better start realizing that theirs is closing quickly. Carolina could have a legitimate shot at winning the NFC championship, but everything will have to break just perfectly for them.

Dallas Cowboys +2000

I like the Cowboys a lot this year. They should be solid on both sides of the ball and could reach the Big Dance if quarterback Tony Romo continues his eye-opening growth from a year ago.

Washington Redskins +4000

I love Joe Gibbs – too bad the Redskins have more holes than Swiss cheese. Unless Doug Williams and ‘The Smurfs’ come out of retirement, check back with the Skins next year.

New York Giants +3000

It’s only a matter of time before head coach Tom Coughlin is shown the door. Until he is, stay away from the G-Men.

Chicago Bears +1500

There is no doubt the Bears can reach the Super Bowl, likely on the strength of the powerful defense alone. However, the Bears will be offensively challenged once again if Rex Grossman is the starting quarterback.

Philadelphia Eagles +2000

Philly is another team that bettors should think long and hard about reaching the 2007 Super Bowl. A healthy Donovan McNabb will get this team into the postseason at the very least. Now if only the Philadelphia faithful can inject the laid-back McNabb with some of Jeff Garcia’s moxie.

New Orleans Saints +1800

The Saints were the feel-good story of the league last season, but proved they were for real over the long haul and in the postseason. There is no reason why this team shouldn’t contend for the NFC Championship in 2007.

Baltimore Ravens +1800

The Ravens have the defense and a much-improved offense. If quarterback Steve McNair can stay healthy, the Ravens could find themselves playing on the final weekend.

icking the Patriots is obviously the popular pick this offseason, seeing as how they are absolutely loaded on both sides of the ball after revamping their roster this offseason.

While I think the Colts could meet the Pats in the AFC title game for a second consecutive season. I just don’t see anyone beating New England and Bill Belichick this season.

In the NFC, there are several teams that could genuinely reach next season’s Super Bowl, including all four of my ‘Final Four’ teams.

Though I am arguably the biggest Dallas Cowboys hater in the U.S., I am a big fan of new head coach Wade Phillips, and think his presence in the Big D this season could be enough to vault this young team over the top.

So there you have it BetUS football bettors. The 2008 Super Bowl winner will be the New England Patriots.

Cavs/Spurs Game 4 pick

Ok, so it’s no secret that I’ve been way off base with this NBA Finals matchup. Don’t get me wrong, I fully expected the Spurs to win the series. I just thought it would be somewhat competitive with closer scores that’s all. Well, with most MLB games during the day, I would bet on this game and focus on nothing but game 4 tonight. Maybe the Cavs extend the series, maybe they get knocked out, but tonight, I say they keep it close. They must have some level of pride right?

So my pick was as follows:
Cavs +3 vs. Spurs

The first half looked eerily similar to the previous games, low scoring with San Antonio slowly and methodically taking control. Parker was 6-for-7 from the floor for 15 points in the half and Ginobili had nine points on 4-of-9 shooting. Duncan had only two points, missing all five of his shot attempts, but grabbed eight rebounds. James had nine points on 4-of-12 shooting, but Cleveland went through one of its series-long customary dry spells during the second stanza, scoring just 14 points after holding a 20-19 lead after one quarter.

The two teams traded body blows in the 2nd quarter as San Antonio tightened up its defense. They outscored the Cavs 20-14 in building a 5 point halftime lead at 39-34. Parker was 6-for-7 from the floor for 15 points in the half and Ginobili had nine points on 4-of-9 shooting. Duncan had only two points, missing all five of his shot attempts, but grabbed eight rebounds. James had nine points on 4-of-12 shooting, but Cleveland went through one of its series-long customary dry spells.

San Antonio looked to be in complete control in the third, building a 52-42 advantage on a Robert Horry free throw in the third. Parker twice pushed the edge to 11 points, first at 56-45 and then again moments later at 58-47 on a driving layup. The Spurs led 60-52 at the end of three quarters.

A Cleveland run saw the Cavaliers take their first second-half lead of the series at 61-60 on a LeBron James jumper with 7:55 remaining. Daniel Gibson followed with a driving layup for a 63-60 edge, concluding an 11-0 stretch to start the fourth quarter. Duncan made a running half hook and Ginobili drained a layup before Duncan tipped in Ginobilis missed free throw for a 66-63 lead with 5:20 on the clock. After James made one free throw and Anderson Varejao tied the game at 66-66 with a slam, Ginobili lined up a three and the rain-making shot found the bottom of the net for a three-point lead the Spurs never relinquished.

The Spurs built a quick 7 point lead with a minute remaining and Cleveland inexplicably didn’t start fouling until there were 35 seconds remaining.

So there we were, Cavs down 4 with 3 seconds left. The game was obviously decided as was the series. The Spurs were already celebrating. And then the unthinkable happened. Damon Jones takes an uncontested pass and shoots a 3 from the top of the key. Would it actually go. It was almost as if it was in slow motion as it sweetly swished through the net. The Cavs lost by 1, got swept but I had a big win. Isn’t gambling funny sometimes?

I liked Orlando Hernandez and the Mets to beat the Dodgers in LA. Lastly, I liked Matt Morris and the Giants in San Francisco against the Blue Jays

So my picks were as follows:
Cubs over Astros
Mets over Dodgers
Giants over Blue Jays

In the first game, Carlos Zambrano pretty much beat the Astros all by himself, through solid pitching and his bat. Zambrano pitched 8 innings of 3-hit ball, while striking out 8. In addition, Chicago’s ace also hit a long home run, his second of the year. Zambrano shutout going into the eighth when Mike Lamb led off with a walk and pinch-hitter Luke Scott singled as diving center fielder Felix Pie couldn come up with his sinking liner. Brad Ausmus hit a grounder to third and Mark DeRosa threw to second for the force, but second baseman Mike Fontenots relay to first was wild for an error that allowed Lamb to score. That was it for Houston. Chicago also scored a run on a Ryan Theriot single. Woody Williams pitched solidly for the Astros, allowing 2 runs in the loss.

In game 2, Orlando Hernandez was getting the best of Dodgers starter Randy Wolf. The Mets had a 3-0 lead into the 4th. That’s when El Duque unraveled and the Mets bats went silent. The Dodgers scored 5 unanswered runs and beat the Mets 5-3. Randy Wolf allowed 9 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings for the win. Ok, so I’m 1 for 2 with 1 game to go.

In the last game of the night, the Giants faced a shaky pitcher in Josh Towers who actually pitched well in this one. The Blue Jays went up 3-0 before Barry Bonds got the Giants going, hitting his 747th career home run. The Giants won 4-3 on RBI by Ryan Klesko and Omar Vizquel, and I posted a profit for the night.

Another 4-Team Baseball Parlay

I thought Noah Lowry and the Giants would beat the recently struggling Livan Hernandez and the DBacks.For the second straight night, I hoped for a slugfest in Arlington as the Rangers squared off against the Tigers. In the last game, I expected the best pitcher in the major leagues so far, Jake Peavy and the Padres, to beat the Dodgers in San Diego.

So my picks were as follows:
Yankees over White Sox
Giants over DBacks
Rangers vs. Tigers over 11.5
Padres over Dodgers

In game 1, I got more of a pitchers duel than I had expected. After 6
innings of play, the Yankees were up 1-0 on an RBI groundout by Hideki
Matsui. The White Sox tied it up in the 7th and the Yankees scored 3 in the 8th to grab a 4-1 lead. The White Sox came right back in the bottom of the inning with 2 runs of their own, but the Yankees blew the game open with 6 runs in the 9th, powered by Alex Rodriguezs major league leading 21st home run, a grand slam, 1 for 1.

In game 2, I had to sweat it out as the game went into extra innings tied up at 4. Omar Vizquel won this one for me with a game winning single and Steve Kiline worked the 10th inning for his 1st save of the year. Vizquel had 3 hits and 3 RBI while Connor Jackson homered and drove in 3 for the DBacks.

In game 3, it was chock full of offense and poor pitching as Kameron Loe
basically pitched batting practice, allowing 9 runs and 9 hits in 2 innings
of work. Mike Maroth allowed 3 runs over 5 innings and the Tigers won 11-4, easily covering the over for me. Curtis Granderson drove in 3 runs with 3 hits and Brandon Inge drove in 3 on 2 hits for the Tigers.

In game 4, I was pretty upset for most of the night as Jake Peavy had a rare off night on the mound. The ace right-hander allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. The Dodgers held a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the 9th at a pitcher friendly park. I basically needed intervention by the gambling gods. Well, guess what? I got it! Geoff Blum started the inning by beating out an infield single to second base. Terrmel Sledge reached on an error by first baseman Garciaparra, who fielded his grounder but had the ball pop out of his glove. Marcus Giles singled to left to load the bases, and Paul McAnulty hit a chopper and outraced Garciaparra to the bag, for an
infield single that brought in the innings first run. Adrian Gonzalez hit a
two-run ground-rule double to right-center, Josh Bard was intentionally
walked to reload the bases and Mike Camerons single to center brought in
McAnulty to tie the game. And I won my 4-teamer folks. Hows that for a
nice ending to my night and week?

Winning a parlay is truly a great feeling. It was nice to get back on the
winning side again. Hopefully I can build some momentum over the weekend and
make a big run.

Playoff Picks Kickoff

Well with my first posting I hope to give you a few NFL Playoff Winners. Bets will be 1-4units.
Saturday: Both games have good betting opportunities.

Dallas/Seattle - Both defense give up the big play especially the Cowboys. Watch for Branch to get behind the defense a few times for some big plays and scores. Turnovers will also help. Take the Over for 3 units.

KC/Indy - Indy will win this game but with the spread, their defense and a great KC running game KC will eat clock and keep it close. 7 is too much buy the half and hammer it Indy +7.5 4units
